The Canary Islands make up an archipelago off the coast of Africa. These Spanish islands are diverse in both their landscape, and in the experiences they offer holiday goers. From deserts to lush mountains, these islands are a unique sight to behold. There are seven islands total, listened from largest to smallest beginning with Tenerife, then Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, and finally, El Hierro. In terms of popularity, Tenerife holidays reign supreme. With it’s world famous Carnival, fantastic beaches, and delicious food, this island is the place to beat for any tourist. However, Gran Canaria, the second largest, and second most popular, is quickly becoming an equal. In total, near nine million tourists visit these islands every year, making them some of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

The central island is the circular island of Gran Canaria, and just beside it is the largest island of Tenerife. The other islands dot around these two, and vary in size. The terrain on Gran Canaria alone is extremely diverse, with desert sands, towering mountains, and lush national parks. The beaches feature crystal clear Atlantic waters, warm African sun, and soft sand. Anyone who loves water sports, hiking or other outdoor activities will truly love these islands. At the same time, you can enjoy lounging in the sun, luxurious pampering, and an all around tranquil environment. Stay at any one of the resorts available, or choose a comfortable hotel. You can reach the islands easily, with any of the airports, or by a short ferry ride if you’d like to travel between islands.

The capital of Tenerife is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which hosts one of the largest Carnivals in the world, rivaling that of Rio in Brazil. Complete with elaborate costumes, a parade, and fun music, this is an event you can’t miss. Spanning the course of over a week in February, tourists from all over come to this island just to experience this festival first hand. The capitals of the other islands include Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Gran Canaria, Arrecife in Lanzarote, Santa Cruz de La Palma in La Palma, San Sebastian de La Gomera in La Gomera, Valverde in El Hierro, and Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura.

Canary Island holidays are popular among tourists of all kinds, from all around the world. Whether you want a relaxing holiday on the beach with your kids, or a fast paced, adventurous holiday with friends, you can find it on these Spanish Islands.
